Journey to Extremism in Africa: Drivers, Incentives and the Tipping Point for Recruitment
In September 2017, UNDP’s Africa Regional Bureau published a seminal, multi-country study on the “Journey to Extremism in Africa” which, via interviews with 495 former members of extremist groups, identifies sociological and ideological drivers for recruitment of violent extremists in the continent. The report provides a strong example of building knowledge and evidence on the drivers of extremism to generate new understanding, challenge prevailing assumptions, and inform programming approaches.
