Research on Text Book for Islamic Studies at Madrasah Aliyah

Throughout October until February 2019, this project conducted research on textbook used in madrasa to teach Islamic Religious Education iin five cities in Indonesia including Jakarta, Cirebon, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Manado. The research found that most of the textbooks are generally moderate. However, there are contents that promote exclusivist view on religion in which students are encouraged to see people from different religion- especially Christians and Jews- as ‘others’ and ‘wrong’. Furthermore, some contents also promote fatalistic view of the world, in which the religion holds absolute power over everything, and blunts students’ critical thinking skill. It also highlights some contents that promote religious fanaticism, sectarianism, and even extremism. The research was able to provide evidence-based knowledge on how some selections of text books for IRE subject in madrasa can influence radicalizing students, regardless of the intentions.
